Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties which make it a highly effective remedy against acne. Research suggests that a component, Terpinen-4-ol found in tea tree oil is highly effective in treating acne as compared to Benzoyl peroxide which is a chemical added to acne creams or acne healing ointments. Due to its anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties it helps heal inflamed and sensitive skin and reduces redness. It is known to combat a variety of skin conditions.
The major causes of acne are bacteria, overworking oil glands and hormonal changes. Tea tree oil is also known to reduce oil on skin and is a natural antiseptic thus an effective remedy against acne.
In a 2017 study, 14 participants applied tea tree oil twice a day on their skin for 12 weeks. Researchers concluded that tea tree oil had significantly improved mild to moderate acne with no serious side effects. In 2018 study, aloe vera, propolis and tea tree oil were combined to heal acne and this combination was found very effective.
How to Use:
Though direct application of tea tree oil is not recommended and it is better to dilute it by adding it to a carrier oil.
- Wash your face with a mild soap or cleanser and pat dry before applying tea tree oil.
- Combine 1 to 2 drops of tea tree oil with 12 drops of a carrier oil that suits your skin and apply to cleansed skin.
- Use twice a day.
Before you apply this oil to your face do a small patch test on the inside of your elbow. Then apply it to your face after few hours, if no allergic reaction is noticed.
